DIRECTORIES

The following directories are available at the Norwood Branch of the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Library—ask at the desk. They are useful for finding names and addresses of residents and businesses. Occupations and spouses' names are often listed, also. By using several directories, changes in addresses over time can be determined, too.
Other sources of directories (especially the Cincinnati City and the Suburban Directories) are the Cincinnati Historical Society, the main Cincinnati & Hamilton County Library and the Norwood Historical Society (list of directories follows below).

Norwood Village Directory 1896 First directory of the 8-year old village has residences and businesses listed. The listing is alphabetical by last name, only — no ordered address listing. Since there were no numbered street addresses at the time, the addresses are usually given by relative location from an intersection, e.g. "res s s Mentor, 2nd h w Main ave.", or "residence north east corner Williams and Ivanhoe" which, incidentally, were the respective addresses for Mayor David Davis and the W. C. Baker family.

YEARBOOKS

The following yearbooks are in the Norwood Historical Society's collection. Donations to the Norwood Historical Society of any annuals not listed would be greatly appreciated.

NOTES: Prior to 1923, the Norwood High School yearbook may have been called The Beacon & Mirror. The 1944 Senior Book stated that the first Silhouette was published in 1923; the first annual, "an enlargement of the school paper," was published in 1908 as The Beacon, and later as The Mirror. Other sources of the Norwood High School Silhouette yearbooks are the Library (see below for a list) and the Norwood Alumni Association. Thanks to the Norwood Alumni Association's kind donation, we have four more annuals and a "Senior Book" in our collection. They are marked * in the following list. More Silhouettes (marked €) have been acquired recently by our curators. Those marked † were donated to the Society from the Norwood Branch Library's duplicates on August 16, 2010. On Sept. 1, 2010, more Silhouettes were donated from the Alumni's duplicates and are marked ‡ (later donations ‡‡). Donations from members or others are marked with #.

NEWSPAPERS

The Norwood Branch Library has various editions of City Times, Norwood Advertisers, Norwood Enterprise, Norwood Enterprise Press and The Norwood Times. The Norwood Historical Society has various Norwood newspapers from several years, but mainly issues of the 1950s-1980s Norwood Enterprise. The Cincinnati Historical Society may have the Norwood Enterprise for 1895-1988?, with gaps, and the Norwood News for 1911-12. Because of the fragile nature of old newspaper, public access to the original newspapers may be restricted at all these organizations.
The Magazine and Newspaper Department of the Main Library downtown has microfilm of Norwood Enterprise for 1930-69 and Norwood News for 1930-51. Other Cincinnati and out-of-town papers dating back to the 1800s are also on microfilm at the Main Library and The Cincinnati Historical Society. These papers have had many articles about Norwood over the years.
