An Ordinance, No. 1030.

SECTION 1. — Be it ordained by the Council of the Village of Norwood: That hereafter when the Council, by ordinance or resolution duly passed, shall require the construction of sidewalks by the owners of lots and lands abutting on such sidewalks, such sidewalk, if ordered to be constructed of plank, and unless otherwise directed, shall be located in the middle of the sidewalk right of way, and shall be laid in the following manner: The flooring shall consist of plank one and three-fourths inches thick, six inches in width, sawed into lengths of four feet, and laid at right angles to the line of the walk, with spaces of one-fourth of an inch between the pieces. The sills shall consist of three by four-inch scantling set on edge. The outside edge of the scantling shall be set back three inches from the end of the flooring. The sills in each row shall be connected by three-inch half lap joints and spikes. The flooring shall be secured to the sills by two spikes driven in each end, said spikes to be not less than four inches in length. |
SEC. 2. Be it further ordained by the Council of the Village of Norwood: That when Council by ordinance or resolution duly passed shall require the construction of sidewalks by the owners of lots and lands abutting on such sidewalks, such sidewalk, if ordered to be constructed of cinders, and unless otherwise directed, shall be located in the middle of the sidewalk right of way, and shall be laid in the following manner: A trench five feet and four inches in width shall be excavated to a depth of nine inches below the curb grade of the street and then filled with clean cinders to a depth of not less than eight inches. SEC. 3. This ordinance shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law. SEC. 4. Ordinance No. 27, passed March 4, 1889, is hereby repealed. Done at the Council Chamber of the Village of Norwood, this 6th day of February, A. D. 1899.

Interestingly, this ordinance was concerned with the construction of sidewalks made of wood or cinders, even though concrete sidewalks had been constructed for years in the village.
