"Norwood, Her Homes and Her People"

by Ren Mulford, Jr., and Werter G. Betty,
Norwood's first official historians

A FEW PERSONAL REMARKS.

- pages 53 & 54 -

When, by an emphatic vote, Norwood declared in favor of a water works system, the idea of a souvenir came as an after-thought. Twenty gentlemen went before council and asked that this work be accorded official recognition, and their communication met with favor. By resolution, introduced by Mr. Thomssen, council named Ren Mulford, Jr., and Werter G. Betty historians of the village, and the souvenir was thus officially made a part of the water works celebration. The guarantors made it possible for the work to gain such encouragement were H. C. Meader, C. E. Page, R. P. Bellsmith, Robert Leslie & Co., Moessinger, Fitsch & Hugle, J. U. Lloyd, Alfred Springer, F. D. Barker, A. McNeill, F. Mehmert, Wm. Windhorst, Henry Rikhoff, N. Ashley Lloyd, Wallace M. Davis, E. W. Jewell, George Puchta, A. C. Strobel, W. W. Russell, H. J. Reedy and A. Y. Reid. In the preparation of this volume, words of encouragement, backed by deeds, were numerous. No other village ever attempted a work of such magnitude, and to its success there were many contributors who have interesting stories of their own to tell in the in the closing pages of the book. It would not be just to say that all Norwood's friends are to be found in that chapter, for there are many others who now enjoy, and who have lent materially to the beauty, growth and development of Norwood, but those whose names are emblazoned on the advertising pages have emphasized their interest in Norwood, her homes and her people.
