This is an east-west residential street, in South Norwood, connecting Montgomery Road and Floral Avenue. The first street to the north is Cameron Avenue and the first street to the south is Williams Avenue.

ORIGIN OF NAME |

|
It may have been named after Jackson Slane, a Sharpsburg/Norwood pioneer. In February, 1867, he was one of the signers calling for the establishment of a separate school district for Sharpsburg. Prior to this the Townships (Columbia and Millcreek) operated the local schools. After the creation of the
Sharpsburg School District, he was elected as one of three members of the newly formed board of education. Interestingly, his wife Hettie W. Slane's maiden name was Cameron, which was the name given to the next street to the north of Slane Avenue. |

Before the Village of Norwood was incorporated in 1888, this street was called Maple Avenue. In fact, the map included with the petition for incorporation uses the Maple Avenue name. As there was another Maple Avenue (in old Norwood) within the newly incorporated Section 34 of Columbia Township and a Maple Street (later renamed Lloyd Avenue) in East Norwood, the name was changed to Slane Avenue. Originally, Slane Avenue did not extend all the way to Floral Avenue. On October 1, 1906, council approved Ordinance No. 1863 to purchase certain property in order to extend the street. Ordinance No. 1892 was approved on January 7, 1907, to extend Slane Avenue from Floral Avenue 427 feet west to the then existing eastern end of the street. A 1904 map shows a log cabin and several smaller buildings at the location. The addition appears to align with the line separating Sections 33 and 34 of Columbia Township, unlike the original parts of Slane Avenue, which are at a slightly more than 2° angle from this east-west section line. |
